Horticulture
As a dairy farm, Dunleath
Estates is regarded as one of the
most progressive units in the UK,
but the horticultural side of the
farming business is equally
forward-looking.
Horticultural manager, Trevor
McCullough (who also oversees the
gardeners, John and Gary) has
worked with Lord Dunleath to
develop a very successful
horticultural enterprise, combining
a pick-your-own operation with
commercial fruit production.

Commercial production focuses
on protected strawberries, grown in
a series of poly tunnels and sold
through supermarkets, restaurant
and a number of other retail outlets.
The pick your own farm is
accessed from the main Greyabbey
to Ballywalter road, and
incorporates strawberries and
raspberries, tayberries, loganberries and gooseberries, blackcurrants and redcurrants, as well as peas bean, mangetouts, cauliflower andcabbage. The rows of fruit andvegetables are widely placed for

easy access, and have been plantedin grass seed between. This is kept
short as a lawn and provides a
greater level of cleanliness and
comfort for customers. At present,
the fruit farm is still in its growth
phase for the season and will not
open to the public until mid-June,
remaining open until the end of
August.
